Ron is Back!
(with some interesting stuff!)

Back - AGAIN!

Yes, Ron’s back and it really does seem as though I’ve never been away. Summer passed without incident and my warm weather Winter training went incredibly well. I’m ready for the fray.

Since I last wrote to you it seems the World has become slightly madder and maybe a tad more dangerous while Topsham B.C. sails serenely on towards another Christmas and beyond. What, however, will 2018 bring?

My spies tell me that the men are unable to field a Captain for the new season meaning that, for the first time ever, we’ll be led by a lady Captain & Vice. Well if it’s good enough for the Country it surely must be good enough for a Devon bowls club! I hope that we’ll all be offering our full support and our thanks to the ladies concerned as, after all, it doesn’t bear thinking about had they not stepped up to the plate.

This does though make me wonder what might happen when the current crop of willing work horses within the club retires to their grassy field for a very well-earned rest. Others will have to come forward to take on their jobs or else the club will slowly decline and fold. Not a scenario to cheer the soul!

‘What about you, Ron?’, I hear you shout. An interesting thought, but, with all my foreign bowling and leisure commitments I simply don’t have the time. Others reading this almost certainly do.

Of all my ‘resting places’ it’s Topsham that I most enjoy. The Club’s integral to the place – it must survive and continue to offer all it currently does. So, come on guys, the solution’s in your hands.

Ron Bias.

Winter Quiz

Peter’s Quiz Evening

November 2017 Quiz Peter’s monthly quiz evening, held on Saturday 18th November, attracted a near full-house of 13 teams who were all keen to see what our quizmaster held in store for us this month. After a pleasant evening of thinking, drinking and humour, the winners were the Short Planks with 90 points, closely followed by the Newcomers with 89 points. In third place were Mac’s Lot with 88, the Weakest Link were fourth with 87 and Cassies Cronies were fifth on 86½ points. In fact, so close were the final scores that there was only a 7 point difference between the first and ninth placed teams. D.C.’s Crew won the prize for being the least number of years out on the ‘Guess the age of the Carry On Stars’ round and a further prize for scoring the most points on their Joker round. Both Mac’s Lot and the Tricky Dickies won prizes for being able to name the most Kings and Queens who were on the Throne during notable dates in history. Unfortunately, all the teams were out of the Jackpot by round five which means it will now be rolled over to next month, with an additional three bottles of wine to be added.

The winter quiz dates are now available on the Quiz Page and quiz reports will be provided following the first quiz.
